Did you know that when Disney was creating Tangled, they asked a group of women to describe their ideal man; and thus, Flynn Rider was born. A caring and lovable disposition hidden beneath the roguish, devil-may-care personality and an array of witticisms have made Flynn a Disney icon.   So without further ado, let’s take a look at the best Flynn Rider quotes that make Flynn…well, Flynn!

The Best Flynn Rider Quotes

Starting off strong with one of my personal favorite Flynn quotes, because what is the story of Rapunzel without a good old fashioned hair pun?

“The only thing I want to do with your hair is get out of it! Literally!”

Seeing as most of the plot of Tangled is focused on Rapunzel and her magical hair, besides being a magnificent pun, this quote is a perfect set up for Flynn’s part in the story.

Unlike most of the characters, Flynn has no skin in the game when it comes to Rapunzel’s hair and even when he learns of her abilities he isn’t tempted to take advantage of her gifts.

“My real name is Eugene Fitzherbert. Someone might as well know.”

A name as cool as Flynn Rider has to be an alias. Flynn’s real name is Eugene Fitzherbert, which doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as easy. However, the use of Flynn’s names symbolizes his character development in the film and also how people perceive him; “Flynn” being the thief and player persona he wears and “Eugene” being his authentic self.

Flynn paved the way for underdog love interests in the Disney Princess franchise, preceding Kristoff from Frozen. Without Flynn in Tangled, there would possibly be no Frozen.

“Frying pans. Who knew, right?”

Indeed, Flynn. I’m sure we can all agree that frying pans are the weapon of choice when it comes to self defense in Tangled. Rapunzel starts the trend by knocking out Flynn when he first enters her tower and he soon follows suit.

Even the ruffians and thugs from The Snuggly Duckling put frying pans to good use. Frying pans continue to be used by Flynn in Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, in continuously ridiculous and hilarious ways.

“I’ve been robbed! … So that’s how that feels.”

If you don’t recognize this particular Flynn quote, don’t be embarrassed! Unlike most of the quotes on this list, this line is not from the original movie but from Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, a Disney show that continues Flynn and Rapunzel’s story.

After Flynn officially renounces his life of crime and is pardoned it comes as a shock to him when one day he finds himself at the other end of theft. Karma at its finest.

“Well, that’s the good part, I guess. You get to find a new dream.”

The name for Flynn and Rapunzel’s relationship has been called “New Dream” by fans because of this quote, easily making it one of the best Flynn Rider quotes on this list.

Flynn’s role in Tangled starts with reluctance but as he becomes friends with Rapunzel, his support for her dreams and wellbeing becomes his primary motivation. Comparing how he is prepared to give his life for her at the end of the film means she’d be safe contrasts with his selfish beginnings. His love for Rapunzel makes him a changed man.

“They just can’t get my nose right!”

I can’t write about Flynn Rider without mentioning his vanity. Despite being on the run from the law he takes time to share his dismay at how his wanted posters do not do his nose justice. It’s a running gag through the movie and show. Even after the events of Tangled, he frets over his hair, skin, and nails more than any other Disney princess ever has.

Humility does not come to Flynn easily but at least he has Rapunzel to keep him in check.

“I know not who you are, nor how I came to find you, but may I just say… Hi. How ya doin’?”

Flynn’s character flips the script on the traditional charming, heroic love interest in most other Disney princess movies. He doesn’t speak romantically or with any decorum and this quote puts that on full display. Given Flynn’s background as an orphan turned teenage thief, the absence of etiquette and excess of sass and flirtations makes sense.

If you are interested in learning more about Flynn’s humble beginnings, I recommend The Rise of Flynn Rider by Jen Calonita.

“You broke my smolder.”

Ah, yes. The smolder. Flynn’s signature flirtatious expression he believes to be foolproof when it comes to wooing women. However, it does not work so seamlessly on Rapunzel upon their first meeting.

I don’t blame her. If a stranger pucker their lips and raised their eyebrows at me, staring me down in an attempt at flirting, I too would want to hit him with a frying pan.

What, like school? I was great at school! Easiest three days of my life!”

Another example of Flynn’s rouge past. I genuinely don’t know if this is a truthful statement and Flynn actually only attended school for three days in his youth or if he’s just being sarcastic. I suppose it’s up for interpretation. Either way, the quote makes me chuckle every time.

Not that Flynn is dumb…but it must be said he isn’t the brightest, especially compared to artistic and well read Rapunzel but that makes him all the more endearing.

“Did I ever tell you I got a thing for brunettes?”

A happy thought for brunettes everywhere. Other than Flynn cracking a joke during a serious moment, lightening the grim mood after Rapunzel and him had to confront Mother Gothel, it’s a nice sentiment.

Flynn once again affirms that he doesn’t care about Rapunzel’s hair. He loves her for entirely unselfish reasons and never cared for her solely to make use of her magical abilities like Mother Gothel. That kind of unconditional love is no less than what Rapunzel, and any other girl, deserves.

“Sometimes, love just finds a way of happening all on its own.”

I love that we get to watch the development of Flynn and Rapunzel’s love in Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventures and. The series truly shows how far Flynn has developed when he gives us powerful wisdom like this quote.

The “enemies to lovers” and “friends to lovers” tropes have risen in popularity and I believe that Flynn and Rapunzel are perfect examples of both. They are perhaps one of the most loved Disney couples and this Flynn quote fits them perfectly.

Neither one of them were looking for love; Flynn’s goal originally being to steal the tiara and Rapunzel’s to see the “floating lights.” Their goals did not fulfill them like they expected them too but their unexpected love for each other did.

“Stay calm. It can probably smell fear.”

Can we take the time to appreciate the fact that this quote is about a bunny? This line can only be truly appreciated with the combination of Flynn’s stony disposition to Rapunzel’s overreaction causing her to literally jump onto his back at the appearance of a harmless rabbit. His dry tone, unimpressed eyes, and stoic stance as Rapunzel clings to him makes me laugh without fail.

“Let’s just assume for the moment that everyone here doesn’t like me.”

Unlike Rapunzel and the audience, most characters in Tangled don’t look upon Flynn favorably. He is a wanted criminal after all. The royal guard, especially the captain, have it out for him and they aren’t the only ones. The Stabbington Brothers are after vengeance on Flynn for leaving them behind during a theft. The best rivalry, however, is Flynn’s conflict with the palace horse, Maximus.

Other than the villainous Stabbingtons, most of the contention against Flynn is resolved once he starts living honestly.

“The best way to predict the future is to make your own.”

The Disney Princess franchise has always promoted the idea of making your own decisions and breaking free of anything that may hold you back and Flynn’s continued story in Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure continues that narrative.

In Flynn’s case the things holding him back were his past circumstances and low self esteem that forced him to hide behind the flippant scoundrel persona. He learns that he can make his own future by changing his dishonest actions, supported by Rapunzel and her family.

It could even be said that Flynn’s independent nature, even when he was still a thief, inspired Rapunzel to make the daring choice to leave the tower, determined to be independent from Mother Gothel.

“She was a princess worth waiting for.”

Flynn is a complex and inspiring character by himself but without Rapunzel, he may not have been able to move past his criminal lifestyle. Flynn and Rapunzel, Rapunzel and Flynn…it seems you can’t have one without the other. They balance each other out perfectly, learn from each other, and inspire each other.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Tangled is Flynn’s narration of the story. His point of view shows how he sees Rapunzel’s positive affect on even the most unfriendly of people, including him. His respect turns into aspirations to do the same and support her as she reunites with her family and takes her place as princess.

She was his “new dream,” after all.
