What to Wear in Disney World in March

You have decided to take a Walt Disney World trip at one of the best times of the year! It is one of my favorite times of year to travel to the world as well: March! Especially the first half of March before a  lot of spring breaks happen. March is a wonderful time of transition for Walt Disney World. There are multiple things occurring at this time, and they are all beautiful.

A lot of activities happen during this time, while the weather can be a little bizarre, but it is transitioning into spring. It is a wonderful time for Disney travel. Because of all the changes in weather during this time, it can be a little challenging trying to figure out what to pack for a Disney trip in March. Not to worry! Once everything is broken down, it will not seem so overwhelming, and you will know exactly what to pack for your Disney trip.

Let’s get started!

March Weather in Central Florida

The weather in the month of March at Walt Disney World is full of many unknowns. It can sometimes be tricky to determine what exactly you are going to wear from day to day when you travel at this time. Because of this you might have to pack a little more than what you were initially expecting to.

The beginning of March is winter (depending on where you live, March is just winter), and the second half of the month is usually spring. This is the sort of mentality you have to have when you visit Walt Disney World in March. One day, it could be sixty degrees, and then the next day it could be eighty degrees. Yikes. So, you should be prepared for cold and hot in very quick amounts of time. We will talk about this more later.

The weather can be very humid, simply because, it is Florida. However, the humidity is not as apparent as it is during the summer months. Honestly, the heat during March in Walt Disney World is more of a “comfortable” heat. What I mean by this is that the heat does not feel overly harsh whenever you are walking around the parks.

Do not get me wrong, you need to have protection from the heat and the sun. However, it is not as intense as the extremely hot summer months. It’s not even as hot as the months of April and May. The humidity is not as thick and crazy, and a slight breeze will often show itself to cool you off throughout the day. The average high temperature in Disney in march is eighty degrees and the average low is sixty. This can switch very quickly like I mentioned earlier.

Rain is no stranger to central Florida at any time of the year, honestly. March is not part of the rainy season, but rain is still very apparent due to the season transition. It is very normal for a rain shower or a rain storm to pop up very randomly in the middle of the afternoon in Florida. This is especially so during the transition of seasons because it goes back and forth between being hot and cold so fast. These pop up rain storms usually don’t last more than about an hour, however.

Sometimes, they are only about ten minutes. The interesting thing about this rain showers or rain storms is that once they are over, it almost seems like they never happened. Whenever they show up, just head on into a gift shop, a quick service restaurant, or go on an inside ride. The rain usually doesn’t last long, so if you just wait a little bit, the sun will be out as soon as possible!

The weather in central Florida in March can be a little rocky and unpredictable. However, it is not so scary that you can’t be easily prepared for it.

Make Sure You Wear Layers

Out of everything today, if there is one thing that you take away from this article, it has to be to pack layers upon layers upon layers! Here is why this piece of information is everything when it comes to packing for Walt Disney World in March. The weather and temperature can be insanely unpredictable. It is wild how fast the weather can change there at this time of year.

This does not mean changing temperatures from day to day; I mean that it can change drastically throughout the day as well. In the mornings, it can be very chilly, especially if you are going to rope drop the parks (meaning you arrive before the park opens in order to get to the attractions before the park becomes crowded in the middle of the day). Even if you do not rope drop the park, it is going to be cooler in the mornings. You are going to want another layer, such as a:

  • Jacket
  • Rain jacket
  • Sweater
  • Long sleeved shirt
  • Cardio
  • Sweatshirt
  • Sweater

In my experience, you are going to want that extra layer in the morning because it can be rather chilly in the morning. Throughout the day, it will most likely warm up, so you don’t need that layer during the day. My suggestion would be to have something that is easy to wrap around your waist or put in a bag throughout the day. You will most likely need to use it again in the evening. The temperature can really drop in the evenings and nights in central Florida, so you will probably want to keep that jacket and/or sweater that you wore in the morning.

There is even a possibility that you are going to want to wear layers as far as a tank top underneath a t-shirt and such. If you even want to go as far as having a scarf, you can do this as well. If it is a lighter scarf, it can probably be worn throughout the day, but a heavier scarf can probably been warm in the mornings and evenings. Whenever you wear layers, however, make sure that you can easily carry them throughout the day. You are not going to want to carry a whole bunch of jackets and sweaters and scarves throughout the day if you can’t carry anything else. However, make sure that you can easily carry it all.

When the rain hits randomly as well, you will thank yourself that you brought a jacket or sweater with you. In March, the rain can be a colder rain rather than a massive humid rainstorm. These layers can protect you from the elements as well, such as wind, rain, and the sun. If it’s cold, your jackets and sweaters can keep you warm and also protect you from the sun. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you do not have to protect yourself from the sun even though it might be colder and overcast. Sometimes, overcast days can be the worst days. Just because there are clouds doesn’t mean that the sun’s rays are not poking through at all.

You’re also going to want to consider bringing a hat with you in order to keep the sun off of you. Not only does it protect you from the sun, but this way you do not have to constantly reapply sunscreen to your face. It will also keep you somewhat cooler with the hat protecting you from the rays. Also, sunglasses will be your best friend. Definitely carry along pairs of sunglasses with you because you will not want the sun in your eyes all day long. After awhile, squinting and such will give you a headache after a while which is no fun at all, of course.

Remember, layers, layers, layers! Not only do you need to make sure that you are warm enough or cool enough throughout the day, but you need to make sure you are also protected from the sun. With layers that are comfortable and protection from the sun, you will have no problem walking around to all of your adventures.

Clothing Suggestions for Kids and Young Children

If your party includes kids and/or young children, you are going to have to think about what to pack for them as well. Any temperature that is too hot or too cold can sometimes be difficult to pack for, especially for children. However, you just need to think about what are the most comfortable articles of clothing that they own? What are some articles of clothing that your children love to wear all the time? More than likely, pieces of clothing that your child likes to wear all the time, they will agree to wear it at Walt Disney World, even when the weather can be unpredictable.

For kids and young children, you are going to want to want to follow a similar mentality when it comes to layers. You are going to want to make sure your child has an extra jacket or at least an extra layer of clothing to keep them protected and warm during a cooler morning and a cooler evening. They are going to need that for sure, especially because young children and kids are more fragile than adults.

Now, we’re going to discuss good pieces of clothing for kids for both, hot weather and cooler weather and what is comfortable to walk around in for long periods of time. For hot weather, there are multiple things that you can pack for your child. One thing you are going to want to check out is if the clothing you pack for them is a breathable fabric. Now, you do not absolutely have to do this.

However, your child will then be more comfortable in a material that is perfect for the Florida heat. After a long day, the first people that usually get tired are the children, whether they are toddlers or even nine years old. Everyone is exhausted at the end of a long day of adventures, but children are usually the first to get extremely tired. They will still be tired, but being tired in comfortable clothing is significantly better than being extremely exhausted and uncomfortable.

There are some options of breathable fabrics that you can easily obtain for your child. In fact, these suggestions are for adults as well, because just because we’re adults doesn’t mean we don’t have to be comfortable! Some of the best breathable fabrics are cotton, rayon, linen, and silk. These are simply some suggestions of breathable fabrics that are usually better for the summer. If your clothing options are not made of these materials, it does not mean you won’t be uncomfortable. A piece of summer clothing that you have that is made of another fabric might be more comfortable than any of these. These are just some suggestions.

For cooler weather, you won’t have to worry too much about bringing too many extra clothes. The reason I say this is because, why?

Layers!

An extra jacket or sweater for your child can really make a difference and block that wind or rain. Any type of hats, usually baseball hats are the best bet for protection against the elements, just like we mentioned earlier for adults. If you forget a hat or sunglasses or sweater, etc., there are numerous gift shops to buy them at, so no problem.

You might be spending a tad more money than other places. However, it is a fun memory, your child will be protected, and it can be more fun for them (and maybe you) if their clothing and/or accessories have their favorite Disney character on it.

The Flower and Garden Festival, Coordinated Clothing

Alright, so now we get to the really fun part about packing for your March Disney trip. What activities are going on during this time? The reason you want to ask yourself this question is because you can bring along fun articles of clothing and accessories for whatever is happening at Walt Disney World! What do I mean by that? Let me explain.

March is the start of the Flower and Garden Festival in Disney’s EPCOT. This is my favorite festival that EPCOT has all year. It really represents spring time and the time of renewal during the year. The festival for 2020 will be running from March 4 until June 1. Whenever you walk into EPCOT, there are so many beautiful topiaries throughout the entrance that usually feature the fab five in some way. It could be all of them or just a few of them, like Mickey and Minnie.

Throughout the park, the beautiful topiaries are strewn everywhere, creating beautiful artwork that artists have worked on for almost a year in advance. Future World and World Showcase are the two “lands” that exist in EPCOT. Topiaries are strewn about both of the lands, so the festival is in full swing. A detail you want to keep in mind is that when the festival first starts, the topiaries have not completely bloomed, so it seems like a lot of greenery at first.

However, I am here to tell you that it is still absolutely beautiful. Usually this happens just at the first few weeks of the festival. Mid to late March is whenever the flowers start coming in. However, the topiaries are still gorgeous. They are shaped like different Disney characters throughout the park, with specific pieces next to attractions that they coordinate with. For example, a couple years ago (when I last visited the Flower and Garden Festival) there was a Cars topiary display next to Test Track providing a huge racecar vibe.

Whenever you walk over to World Showcase, the place with all the country pavilions, the topiaries become even more amazing. There are multiple displays for photo ops in this part of  the park. If specific Disney characters are from a certain country, usually those characters will show up in that country’s pavilion.

For example, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves are based in Germany, so there’s a beautiful display of a Snow White topiary in the Germany pavilion, complete with a seperate topiary of each dwarf. In Norway, there are beautiful ones of Anna and Elsa, and in England, I have seen gorgeous Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland ones. The artwork of the topiaries brings a huge amount of personalization and renewal to the park. They are so detailed it’s amazing, and as the festival goes on, they become even more beautiful because all the flowers on the topiaries start to bloom. Whenever they are in full bloom, it is so colorful and amazing, you won’t believe your eyes.

The fun aspect too is that they do not just do gorgeous Disney character topiaries, but they plant phenomenal topiaries all along the paths creating this gorgeous landscape throughout the entire park. EPCOT essential become one huge, giant, amazing, absolutely beautiful garden. There are so many photo ops that provide so much color, it is almost shocking. You honestly just need to see it for yourself. There are multiple stands that are set up throughout the park, usually by World Showcase. There are multiple food and drink options that are not available at any other time of year except during Flower and Garden Festival.

Many people usually coordinate their outfits to go with the festival. Why do they do this? Just for fun! It’s fun to dress up a little bit or wear something that goes along with the festival. Many guests wear flower themed mouse ears and skirts and shirts whenever they visit the festival. It is really fun to walk around and see everyone taking part in the festival by wearing flower themed things. You do not have to do this of course, but sometimes it is really fun to get involved with the activities around you. Everything just looks so colorful and beautiful, which is why it is my favorite festival to visit. You should definitely bring flower themed hair accessories, mouse ears, shirts, bags, etc., in order to take part in the fun!

Let’s Recap!

The month of March is one of the best times to take a trip to Walt Disney World. It might be a little overwhelming to start packing at first, especially if it is your first trip to Disney, or it is your first experience Disney planning. As we have discussed throughout the article, however, March is a great time to travel to Walt Disney World for multiple reasons. If you are someone who loves hot weather, but you have someone in your party who likes cooler weather, or vice versa, March is perfect. One day it can be eighty degrees, and the next day, it could be sixty degrees. The weather can change rather quickly, but as long as you are prepared for it, it is no big deal.

My biggest suggestion to you would be to pack layers upon layers for your trip. You are going to want to wear a jacket or a sweater in the early mornings and in the late evenings.  You do not have to, but regardless of the Florida heat, the cool weather really bites when the temperature drops. Long pants are even okay to wear as long as you are comfortable with the outfit that you chose. Comfort and protection from the elements are the most important aspects. This goes for children as well. They must be comfortable, and layers are one of the best things that young children and kids can wear when they travel to Disney in March.

Do not forget that, the Flower and Garden Festival are also going on during the month of March, which is really fun to get involved in. You can bring themed clothing and accessories such as mouse ears that involve flowers in order to become part of the festival.

As long as you bring a variety of clothing options, or even a jacket and/or sweater to go overtop your outfits, packing for March is no big deal. Just enjoy it and have a great time!
