If you’re planning a trip to Disneyland, then it’s perfectly okay to be a little stressed over how scary some of the rides might be.  We aren’t faceless robots or fearless daredevils, we’re human beings, so I figured this list of Disneyland rides ranked by speed would be helpful to you.

In this article, I’m going to rank the top Disneyland rides from the slowest in speed to the fastest ride at the park.  I’ll also dive into what it is about each attraction that makes it either a slow and calm attraction or one that’s both fast and intense.

If fast rides are your favorite thing about visiting the Disneyland parks, this is definitely the perfect list for you! While it’s important to note that there are several rides slower than the ones listed here, I felt that this list of ten rides does a good job encapsulating the wide variety of speed on these notable Disneyland attractions.

10) Disneyland Railroad (Slowest Listed Disneyland Ride)
9) Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster
8) Matterhorn Bobsleds
7) Goofy’s Sky School
6) Monorail
5) Space Mountain
4) Big Thunder Mountain Railway
3) Mission: Breakout
2) Radiator Springs Racers
1) Incredicoaster (Fastest Disneyland Ride)

If you are apprehensive about any potential ride options or experiences, I would highly recommend watching the point of view (POV) videos available for every ride that can be found within the parks! This is a great option for speed sensitive riders and has saved me from quite a few headaches and unpleasant surprises in the past!

Now, without further delay, let’s take a closer look at every attraction on this list!

Disneyland Railroad — Speed of 15MPH

The Disneyland Railroad (our slowest ride of the day) is a classic attraction that takes guests on a scenic tour around the park. While it may not be the fastest ride at Disneyland, it still provides a unique and enjoyable experience for guests of just about any age.

The train travels at a leisurely pace, averaging around 15 miles per hour, which allows passengers to relax and take in the sights and sounds of the park at a comfortable speed. The gentle pace also makes it a great option for families with young children or those who want to take a break from the more thrilling rides.

Thrill Ranking — 1/10

Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster — Speed of 22 MPH

Based on the Disney animated series Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers, the GADGETcoaster features the beloved characters Chip and Dale, along with a team of crime fighters, as they solve mysteries alongside guests on the ride.

This attraction is primarily geared towards children so it is most definitely not the fastest ride in the park, however it still gives quite a bit of speed and the turns can be quite fun for guests of all ages! Each ride vehicle accommodates one adult and one child, and the coaster reaches top speeds of approximately 22 miles per hour.

Matterhorn Bobsleds — Speed of 27 MPH

The Matterhorn bobsleds in Disneyland are known more for their thrilling turns and drops rather than speed, however they can still reach some pretty quick speeds and the ride itself is quite a bit of fun. The ride takes passengers through a winding track that mimics the curves and drops of a real bobsled run and includes two different tracks that guests can find themselves on.

The bobsleds reach speeds up to 27 miles per hour, providing a heart-pumping experience for thrill-seekers…this particular ride is also punctuated by moments of darkness and special effects, adding to the excitement and sense of adventure.

Thrill Ranking — 6/10

Goofy’s Sky School — Speed of 27 MPH

Goofy’s Sky School” by HarshLight licensed under CC BY 2.0

Goofy’s Sky School is one of the most thrilling rides at Disneyland, however it is one of my personal least favorites for this reason. This roller coaster takes riders on a wild ride through the skies with Goofy as their pilot, and while it may not be the tallest or the longest ride in the park, it certainly packs a punch when it comes to speed and turning abilities.

The ride reaches a top speed of 27 miles per hour, making it one of the faster rides in Disneyland. This makes it a great choice for those who are looking for a thrill and enjoy the feeling of wind rushing through their hair, however its intense and unpredictable movements make it one of the most terrifying attractions.

The coaster features sharp turns, sudden drops, and hairpin curves that will leave even the bravest of riders clinging to their seats and feeling like they are going to quite literally fly off the track.

Goofy’s Sky School is not recommended for those who are prone to motion sickness or have a fear of heights, but if you don’t experience any of these this attraction is a must-ride if you happen to be a thrill-seeker looking for a heart-pumping experience.

Thrill Ranking — 8/10

Disneyland Monorail — Speed of 30 MPH

The Disneyland monorail is a One of my favorite attractions because it offers a completely different view of the park. The monorail runs on a track that circles Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, providing passengers with a bird’s eye view of the parks’ attractions and scenery.

While this ride isn’t a roller coaster or a thrilling attraction, it does reach speeds of 30 miles Per hour, which ultimately makes it one of the faster rides in the resort area! Despite its speed, the monorail offers a smooth and comfortable ride which is a big part of what makes this ride so special! Guests are able to get speed and see the parks, but they can avoid the sharp and aggressive turns that typically come along with the faster paced rides!

Thrill Ranking — 2/10

Space Mountain — Speed of 35 MPH

Space Mountain is one of the most popular and thrilling rides at the Disneyland Resort, and comes in at a whopping 35 miles per hour. This attraction is a high-speed roller coaster that takes riders on a journey through space complete with twists, turns, and drops for all to enjoy.

The ride takes place entirely in the darkness, which adds an extra layer of excitement and mystery to the experience but can also make the attraction a bit more intimidating for younger riders. The ride begins with a slow ascent up a dark tunnel, building anticipation for the upcoming thrills.

Once at the top, riders are launched into a series of twists and turns, all while hurtling through the darkness. The attraction is designed to make it feel like you’re flying through space, with stars and galaxies zooming past you at breakneck speeds.

While Space Mountain is not for everyone, it’s a must-ride for those who love high-speed roller coasters and dark spaces. The ride is also a great option for those who want a break from the heat and crowds of the park, as the dark and air-conditioned ride provides a welcome respite.

Thrill Ranking — 7/10

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad — Speed of 35 MPH

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is the third fastest attraction within the Disneyland resort, and it happens to be a popular thrill ride that takes riders on a wild journey through a gold-mining town in the old west. The ride features twists, turns, and drops that make it a thrilling experience for visitors of all ages, and while only a portion of the ride hits 35 mph, it does feel pretty fast when you are participating in the ride.

With a top speed of 35 miles per hour, this attraction makes a great option for those who want a little excitement, but aren’t quite ready for the high speeds of other Disneyland rides that might be a little bit faster and more stressful. With its theming and impressive ride effects, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a classic Disneyland attraction that shouldn’t be missed.

It’s important to note that there are safety advisories in place for this particular attraction due to the rapid corners and drops!

Thrill Ranking — 7/10

Mission: BREAKOUT — Speed of 39 MPH

Mission Breakout is a thrilling ride located in California Adventure and it proudly boasts the largest drop of any roller coaster in either of the two parks. The ride features a vertical drop that reaches speeds of up to 39 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest and most intense rides in the park (it comes in at third place for the fastest ride in the park, not factoring in the speed of Splash Mountain). The drop is approximately 130 feet, and the ride vehicle moves up and down the tower multiple times before plummeting to the bottom.

The speed and intensity of the drop makes Mission Breakout a popular attraction for thrill-seekers, but it may not be suitable for those who are sensitive to heights or fast drops. I would not recommend this attraction to anyone who may struggle with large drops or motion sickness.

Thrill Ranking — 10/10

Radiator Springs Racers — Speed of 40 MPH

The second fastest ride within the Disneyland resort is none other than Radiator Springs Racers, a thrilling ride at Disneyland California Adventure that takes visitors on a high-speed adventure through the world of Cars. This attraction reaches a top speed of 40 miles per hour and has plenty of fun for both younger and older riders.

Guests can look forward to experiencing the thrill of racing against other cars and zooming through the stunning scenery of Radiator Springs at high speeds, making this ride perfect for adventurers who feel the need for speed.

The ride features impressive animatronics and special effects that bring the beloved characters to life and the queue area is also a treat for visitors, as they get to explore the town of Radiator Springs and interact with imagery of the town’s citizens before embarking on their racing adventure.

It is worth mentioning however, that the wait times for this particular attraction are often very long, so you may find yourself wanting to purchase an Individual Lightning Lane (ILL) for this particular attraction if you would prefer not to wait upwards of 90 minutes to ride!

Thrill Ranking — 6/10

Incredicoaster — Speed of 55 MPH

Coming in at number one, Incredicoaster is the fastest ride that can be found in the Disneyland resort, and it’s certainly not hard to see why. This thrilling roller coaster takes riders on a high-speed adventure through the world of the Incredibles with twists, turns, drops, and inversions that will leave you breathless.

The ride starts with a launch that propels you from 0 to approximately 55 mph in just a very small handful of seconds, making it one of the fastest accelerating coasters in the world.

From there, you’ll soar through all kinds of inclines, drops and even an inversion, all while enjoying incredible views of Disney’s California Adventure Park. With a top speed of 55 mph and a reasonably long ride time, Incredicoaster is a must-ride for anyone seeking the ultimate coaster experience.

Thrill Ranking — 10/10

A Note About Splash Mountain?

With Splash Mountain officially closing its doors at the end of May 2023 to complete a brand new re-theme (based on The Princess and the Frog), it has temporarily been removed from the list until more is known about the speed of the attraction post re-theme! The original ride came in at about 40 miles per hour, Which would place it as tied for second place in the ranking of the fastest Disneyland attractions!

At the present time, not much is known about Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, However we can safely assume that since the new theme will be keeping the original drop at the end of the ride, that speeds will remain somewhat similar!
